This chimney was struck by lightening because the "crown" of the chimney had completely eroded away and left the metal exposed. These are the before & after pictures. This is one of the many safety issues involved with not getting your chimney inspected. This customer had no idea his chimney was in poor repair until it was struck by lightening. If he had had a regular inspection it would have never reached this predicament.
The final product is a 3 inch concrete "crown" with a 1 1/2 inch drip edge. This drip edge diverts the rain & snow away from the the chimney "chase" like the eves on a house. This prevents further erosion of the chimney chase. We use concrete to build our crowns unlike our competitors. They use metal crowns, which are more expensive, they don't last as long because they rust out, & they do not have the protective drip edge.
These are before & after pic of a very dirty chimney. This chimney had had a chimney fire. As you can see it so dirty you can't really tell what you are looking at until you see the after picture.
This chimney also had a chimney fire. When creosote catches on fire it burns at 2000 degrees & it expands & restricts the opening. Most people don't know they've had a chimney fire until we show them the pictures. Not knowing can be very dangerous.
These before & afters are another example of the concrete crown restoration.
The first two are pictures of a chimney fire before we cleaned it & after. These are the perfect example of how the creosote can expand & restrict the opening. Again, these people had no idea they had a fire but they were having smoke come back in the house so they though they should have it looked at. The other pictures are more examples of what a chimney fire does to your chimney. These people were all lucky because the installation of their systems were good, so the fire was contained in the chimney pipe. If your installation is not up to code the fire could spread to the rest of the house. That is one of the reasons why you should have regular inspections of your chimney & system.
